I love taking morning walks in the city on Christmas Day, especially if it’s snowing. The city feels peaceful, the streets are almost empty, and sometimes you’ll see light coming from a café window.

In this guide, you’ll find what’s open, where to eat, how to get around and a few lovely places to explore on foot. Save it for later so you can plan ahead and enjoy the day without last-minute surprises.

Things to Do in Edinburgh on Christmas Day

Imagine an early Christmas morning in the Old Town of Edinburgh. The streets are unusually quiet, the Christmas decorations are all up, and the snow’s just starting to fall (if you’re lucky). Brush the flakes off your coat and carry on, enjoying a side of the city you don’t normally get to see.

Even without the snow, Christmas Day is a lovely day to take the time to wander around Edinburgh.

    1. Explore Edinburgh’s Old Town

Take a walk along the Royal Mile, wander through the narrow closes and enjoy views of Edinburgh Castle from the outside.

With fewer shops and attractions open, you can appreciate the architecture and little details you might otherwise walk past.

    2. Enjoy the Views from Calton Hill

If the weather is on your side, head up Calton Hill for some of Edinburgh’s best city views.

It’s a relatively short climb, with wonderful views towards Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street and Arthur’s Seat. Wrap up warmly – the top can be rather windy!

    3. Walk Through Dean Village and Stockbridge

For somewhere away from the main tourist streets, I’d recommend Dean Village and Stockbridge.

Start in Dean Village, admire the beautiful old buildings around Well Court and, if the riverside path is in good condition, follow the Water of Leith towards Stockbridge.
    ❝
This is one of my favourite areas of Edinburgh to explore on foot. Plenty of interesting little details line the way, even when the shops and cafés are closed.
For more places to look out for, check out my Dean Village guide, which also includes tips for exploring Stockbridge.
    Prefer a ready-made route?
My self-guided Edinburgh walks include interactive maps, local stories and carefully chosen stops, so you can explore at your own pace.

    4. Attend a Christmas Day Church Service

If you’d like a more traditional Christmas experience, consider attending a service at St Giles’ Cathedral on the Royal Mile or St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in the West End.

Check their official Christmas Day service times for 2026 and any entry arrangements before visiting.

Where to Eat on Christmas Day in Edinburgh

Finding somewhere to eat on Christmas Day takes a little more planning than usual. Some restaurants serve traditional Christmas lunches, while others offer something different.

Here are a few options to consider for 25 December 2026:
    Restaurant
    Christmas Day offering & price
Inn on the Mile – Royal Mile
    Christmas Day dining
    £74.95 adult / £29.95 child
    Metro Brasserie – Grassmarket
Four-course lunch with a glass of fizz
    £85 adult / children’s menus from £24.50
    Hector’s – Stockbridge
    Four-course Christmas meal
    £94 adult / £50 child
Mother India’s Café – Old Town
Indian food instead of traditional Christmas dinner
2026 Christmas Day details to be confirmed
Check prices, availability and booking conditions directly with each restaurant before making plans.

Just Looking for a Drink or Something More Casual?

Not everyone wants to spend £80 or more on Christmas lunch!

Hard Rock Cafe on George Street has advertised Christmas Day bar service from noon, with walk-in seating for over-18s. Confirm the arrangements before visiting.

If you’re exploring Dean Village and Stockbridge, Hector’s has also announced Christmas Day opening. However, I haven’t yet confirmed whether you can stop in just for a drink without booking a meal.

I’m also keeping an eye out for cafés and pubs offering more casual options, particularly around Stockbridge.
    My tip
Don’t assume that a restaurant advertising a festive menu is open on 25 December. Many festive menus are available only in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Check the actual Christmas Day menu and any deposit or prepayment requirements.

Getting Around Edinburgh on Christmas Day

Getting around Edinburgh on 25 December can be tricky, especially if you’re staying outside the city centre or have a Christmas lunch reservation.

Here’s what you need to know:
    Christmas Day transport
    • Buses: Lothian Buses usually operates a limited Christmas Day service on selected routes. The 2026 timetable is still to be confirmed.
    • Trams: There was no tram service on Christmas Day in 2025. Check the 2026 arrangements before relying on them.
    • Trains: ScotRail has confirmed that no trains will run on 25 December 2026.
    • Taxis: Available through some operators, but expect higher Christmas Day fares. Booking ahead is advisable.
    • Walking: If you’re staying centrally, exploring on foot is probably your easiest option.
Arriving at Edinburgh Airport on Christmas Day? Check the special Airlink 100 timetable before travelling. My Edinburgh Airport to City Centre guide explains the usual transport options, but Christmas Day services may be different.
    My tip
If you’ve booked Christmas lunch, check the festive transport timetable and allow extra time for your journey there and back. Buses may run less frequently than usual, and some other services might not operate at all.

A Few Things to Plan Before Christmas Day

A little preparation can make Christmas Day in Edinburgh much more enjoyable.
    Before Christmas Day
    • Stock up on essentials. Most supermarkets and shops are closed on Christmas Day, so buy food, snacks and anything else you might need by Christmas Eve.
    • Don’t rely on finding an open café. If you’re planning a long walk, take a drink and perhaps a snack with you. Even places that normally open every day may be closed.
    • Make the most of daylight. December days in Edinburgh are short, with sunset around 3.40pm. Plan your longer walks and photo stops earlier in the day.
    • Dress for Scottish winter weather. A warm, waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially if you’re exploring Calton Hill or the Water of Leith.
