Practical Tips for Visiting Edinburgh at Christmas
Is Edinburgh Worth Visiting at Christmas?
Edinburgh at Christmas 2026: FAQs
Does it snow in Edinburgh at Christmas?
It can, but I wouldn’t plan your trip around a white Christmas.
Edinburgh doesn’t get frequent or long-lasting snow, but now and then you can wake up to find the city covered in white.
Here’s a tip from someone with a Nordic background: if that happens, don’t be lazy. Go outside straight away. The Old Town, rooftops and Christmas decorations can look absolutely beautiful in fresh snow, but it may not last long. A few hours later, it can melt, grey or be trampled into slush.
So if you open the curtains and Edinburgh is white, grab your camera and make the most of it.
For the rest of your trip, cold, wind and rain are much more realistic possibilities.
How many days do you need in Edinburgh at Christmas?
For a first visit, I would allow at least two or three full days.
That gives you time for some festive attractions while still leaving space to explore Edinburgh itself.
If you also want Christmas at the Botanics, a theatre show or Hogmanay, add more time.
Is Edinburgh expensive at Christmas?
It can be, particularly for accommodation on December weekends and around Hogmanay.
Booking early and staying slightly outside the immediate Princes Street area can help.
The good news is that some of the nicest Christmas experiences — walking around the lights, exploring the Old Town and simply seeing the city decorated — cost nothing.
Is Edinburgh good for families at Christmas?
Yes. The Christmas Market, funfair, ice rink, Giant Lanterns and Christmas shows all include family-friendly options.
Just avoid trying to fit everything into one day. Small legs and Edinburgh hills are not always the best combination.
What should I book first for an Edinburgh Christmas trip?
I would start with accommodation, especially for December weekends or Hogmanay.
After that, book anything you would genuinely be disappointed to miss: Christmas at the Botanics, a particular show, Christmas Day lunch or another ticketed event.
Can you visit Edinburgh at Christmas without going to the Christmas Market?
Absolutely. The Christmas Market is only one part of Edinburgh in December.
You could easily build a trip around neighbourhoods, winter walks, museums, restaurants, theatres and other festive events without spending much time there at all.
