The Kerry Way: hiking from Waterville to Caherdaniel by Coast

A Spontaneous Hike on the Kerry Way: Nature, History & a Well-Deserved Reward.

An incredible day in the most beautiful region of Ireland - authentic local life, breathtaking views from the coastal cliffs, and moderate physical exertion.

When work tasks are wrapped up, but the flight schedule to Edinburgh doesn’t align, it’s time to think fast. A quick check of the weather—no rain, manageable wind—and the urge for adventure kicks in.

What better way to spend the day than a 13 km hike on the Kerry Way? Well, in the end, it turned into 16-17 km, as I couldn't resist adding a stretch of the Derrynane Mass Path. That little extension made the hike even more rewarding.

I highly recommend it to everyone who likes to get out in nature. The day was full of incredible natural views, including coastal views; we hiked over a mountain (this was also the most challenging section of this hike) and made friends with sheep who peacefully grazed grass on the top of the hill and whose pen we passed through on our way.

A small reward awaits you at the highest peak of the hike, where you can find a Neolithic or Bronze Age wedge tomb

With a smile full of nature and history experiences, I walked into the Blind Piper pub in Caherdaniel. The only thing missing from a perfect day was a gourmet experience, and that's what I got here.

Why This Hike?

If you love nature, history, and a bit of a challenge, this route has it all. Along the way, you get:

Breathtaking coastal views 🌊

A mountain crossing - the most challenging but most rewarding part 🏔️

Sheep encounters - we passed through a peaceful grazing area 🐑

Ancient history - from a Neolithic or Bronze Age wedge tomb to the ruins of a ringfort 🏛️

Tips for Hikers

Footwear: proper hiking boots are necessary - some sections can be rocky and steep.

Weather Check: Kerry's weather can change quickly, even on a dry day. A waterproof layer is a good idea.

Snacks & Water: there aren't many shops along the trail, so pack enough to keep you going.

Navigation: while the route is well-marked, having an offline map (like Maps.me) can be helpful.
