Hotels Near Edinburgh Christmas Market 2026: Where to Stay

Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh decorated for Christmas with illuminated trees, festive garlands and lights around the entrance
Choosing where to stay can make a surprisingly big difference to an Edinburgh Christmas trip.

If you want to be right next to the Edinburgh Christmas Market, George Street, and the main festive attractions, staying near Princes Street or the New Town is the easiest choice.
But you can still find a convenient location without paying city-centre prices.

Haymarket is only about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the Christmas Market, and it has great tram and bus connections if you’d rather not walk.

The Old Town is another easy choice, and Dean Village is a good option if you want a quieter place after spending time in the Christmas crowds.

Here are the areas and hotels I recommend, based on both price and how well they suit an Edinburgh Christmas break.
A quick note about prices
Edinburgh hotel rates can change a lot depending on when you visit.

December weekends, and especially Hogmanay, are often much more expensive than weekdays, so compare prices for your specific dates.

Hotels Right by Edinburgh Christmas Market

If convenience is your priority, staying around Princes Street, George Street or St Andrew Square is hard to beat.

You can walk to the Christmas Market, ice rink, Old Town and plenty of restaurants without thinking about transport at all.

    Motel One Edinburgh-Princes

    Best for: location and value
Motel One Edinburgh-Princes is directly on Princes Street, opposite the Balmoral and close to Waverley Station.

The rooms are fairly compact, but for a short Christmas city break that may not matter much. You are right beside the festive area and within easy walking distance of both the Old Town and New Town.
    ❝
For me, this is one of the strongest location-versus-price options in central Edinburgh.

Four Points Flex by Sheraton Edinburgh

Best for: a simple central base
Four Points Flex is on Shandwick Place at the western end of Princes Street.

It’s a little farther from the busiest part of the Christmas Market, but you can still walk there easily. Trams and buses stop right nearby.

I’d recommend it if you want a practical, modern place to stay and don’t plan to spend much time in your hotel.

    YOTEL Edinburgh

Best for: a modern city break
YOTEL is on Queen Street, only a short walk from George Street and Princes Street.

It has a modern style, compact rooms, and an on-site bar. When booking, check your room category, since some rooms may not have an outside window.

It’s a good option for couples or solo travellers who want a central location without paying luxury hotel prices.

Old Town Hotels – Still an Easy Walk

The Old Town is a great choice if you care as much about historic Edinburgh as you do about the Christmas Market.

You’ll still be close to Princes Street, but you’ll also have the Royal Mile and Edinburgh’s historic streets right outside your door.

    Motel One Edinburgh-Royal

Best for: Old Town atmosphere and transport
Motel One Edinburgh-Royal is close to Waverley Station and just below the Royal Mile.

That makes it particularly convenient if you arrive by train, and you can walk down towards Princes Street and the Christmas Market in minutes.

Like the Princes Street location, the rooms are fairly compact, but the location is excellent.

    The Inn Place

Best for: staying right in historic Edinburgh
The Inn Place is on Cockburn Street, just below the Royal Mile and close to Waverley Station.

You’ll enjoy the Old Town atmosphere while staying close to the Christmas attractions.
    ❝
Cockburn Street is one of those places that instantly makes you feel like you’ve arrived in Edinburgh.

Haymarket Hotels – Better Value Without Being Far Away

Haymarket is one of the first places I check when central Edinburgh hotel prices go up.

It’s still in a great location.

You can walk from Haymarket to the Edinburgh Christmas Market in about 15 to 20 minutes, so you usually won’t need public transport for most sightseeing.

If you’d rather not walk, trams and buses make it easy to get into the city centre.
    Good to know
Haymarket is particularly convenient if you are flying into Edinburgh Airport. Both the tram and Airlink 100 stop here, and Airlink 100 operates 24 hours a day.
Haymarket has lots of pubs, cafés, and restaurants, so you won’t need to go back to Princes Street every time you want a meal.
    ❝
In other words, you’re trading a 15 to 20 minute walk for better hotel prices, which can be a smart choice in Edinburgh during December.

Garner Hotel Edinburgh – Haymarket by IHG

Best for: practical value and airport connections
Garner Hotel is close to Haymarket Station and works well if you want a straightforward base with excellent transport connections.

It’s not a hotel I’d pick for the experience alone, but if the price is much lower than Princes Street, the location is a good reason to stay here.

    The Haymarket Hotel

    Best for: more character
The Haymarket Hotel is spread across Victorian townhouses close to the station.

It has more character than a typical chain hotel, and you’re still within easy walking distance of the city centre.

One thing to know before booking: there’s no lift because the hotel is in historic buildings.

    Leonardo Hotel Edinburgh Haymarket

    Best for: dependable mid-range comfort
Leonardo is a larger, more conventional hotel with a restaurant and bar.

It’s practical, central, and easy to reach from the airport. I’d especially consider it when hotels near Princes Street are expensive.

Hotels Near Dean Village – A Quieter Side of Edinburgh

If you want to stay close to central Edinburgh but don’t necessarily want Christmas crowds outside your door every time you leave your hotel, look towards Dean Village and the Water of Leith.

This area of Edinburgh feels completely different from Princes Street.

Enjoy the market stalls and Christmas lights for a few hours, then head back to one of the city’s prettiest historic neighbourhoods when you’re ready for some peace and quiet.

Staying here also gives you easy access to the Water of Leith and Stockbridge, so you can explore more of Edinburgh beyond the festive centre.

    B+B Edinburgh

Best for: character and a quieter stay
B+B Edinburgh is in an elegant Georgian townhouse in the West End, close to Dean Village.

One of the best features is the historic library lounge, which gives the hotel much more character than a typical city hotel.

It’s a good choice if you want a peaceful place to stay but still want to be within walking distance of central Edinburgh.

    Belford Hostel

    Best for: budget travellers
Belford Hostel is a unique option because it’s in a converted 19th-century church.

I recommend private rooms, but there is also traditional hostel shared rooms, so it’s worth considering if you want to keep your accommodation budget low instead of staying in a standard hotel.

Plus, the location gives you easy access to Dean Village and the Water of Leith.
    ❝
If you want to really explore this part of Edinburgh, I’ve created self-guided walks through Dean Village and along the Water of Leith.

    Luxury Christmas Stays in Edinburgh

If you want your hotel to be part of your Christmas experience, Edinburgh has some great options.

    The Caledonian Edinburgh

The Caledonian sits at the western end of Princes Street and has been one of Edinburgh’s landmark hotels for more than a century.

It’s in a great spot for the Christmas Market, West End, and Princes Street Gardens, and some rooms even have views of Edinburgh Castle.

    The Balmoral Hotel

At the opposite end of Princes Street, The Balmoral is perhaps Edinburgh’s most recognisable luxury hotel.

It’s right next to Waverley Station and just a short walk from the Christmas Market, Old Town, and St Andrew Square.

With afternoon tea in Palm Court and the SCOTCH whisky bar inside, this is a hotel where spending a few hours indoors feels just as special as sightseeing.

    Gleneagles Townhouse

Christmas trees, festive greenery and hanging chandelier-style lights around the entrance of Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh
Gleneagles Townhouse on St Andrew Square offers a smaller, more boutique-style luxury stay.

There’s another reason I always notice it at Christmas: the decorations.
    ❝
From mid-November, I enjoy walking around Edinburgh to see which hotels, restaurants, and shops have started decorating for Christmas. Gleneagles Townhouse is one place worth visiting, even if you’re not staying there.

    Which Area Should You Choose?

    Area:
    Choose it if:
    Princes Street / New Town
It’s your first Christmas trip to Edinburgh and your budget allows.
    Haymarket
You want better value without giving up a good location.
    Old Town
You care more about historic Edinburgh than being right next to the Christmas Market.
    West End / Dean Village
You want somewhere a bit quieter, with Dean Village and the Water of Leith nearby.
No matter where you decide to stay, book early for December weekends, especially Hogmanay.
    ❝
The best hotel isn’t always the one closest to the Christmas Market. Sometimes a 15-minute walk can save you money and let you explore a more interesting part of Edinburgh.
